Masis Bakery

We have been to Masis Bakery in Burbank and Montrose, California a few times since my review in the Burbank Leader was published. We have always received friendly, helpful service. The pastries and confections are superb. It definitely reminds me of a European bakery. Each and every pastry is a work of art. More importantly however, everything tastes wonderful.

Most of these elegant pastries are layered with cake and cream. The flavors are bold and exactly what is described. My favorite are the mini tarts layered with a shortbread crust, cream, and fruit. Check out the red current mini tart for a perfect mix of sweet and sour. It melts in your mouth. And at 0.60 cents each, you will not break the bank or your diet for a sweet confection.

Marie Calendars in Burbank

If you want to waste time and eat bad food, this is the place. Marie Calendar's in Burbank/Toluca Lake has to be one of the worst restaurants in town. My cousin Ron and I ate there this Friday and we waited ten minutes to be seated despite the dozens of empty tables and booths. Then once we ordered, it was another thirty minutes before we got our food. C'mon, it doesn't take that long to dish up 2 turkey dinners.

Both of our dinners arrived lukewarm. The mashed potatoes could have been used for brick mortar they were so thick. Obviously, they had been sitting a pan for at least an hour. The turkey was so dry I could have used a piece of it to sand the table. The stuffing was mushy. The vegetables were raw and so hard I would have broken my teeth trying to eat them. And no cranberries despite the menu description and photo.

And what happened to the days when the waiter brought your cornbread immediately? We didn't receive our cornbread until our meal finally arrived. And even their Marie Calendar's signature cornbread was only so-so. It was too dry and way too sweet. I guess they figure if they add enough sugar to it, then no one will notice how painfully tasteless and dry it is.

And with all of those pies they make, they only have 1 sugar-free selection? I made the mistake of trying it once. Never again. Actually, I think I'll say the same for eating at Marie Calendar's, never again.

Cracker Barrel

The first time I drove across the United States, I kept seeing signs for this place called the "Cracker Barrel" but it looked so quaint and country-ish that I did not bother to stop. Somewhere in Tennessee starvation overtook us and we decided to see what this Cracker Barrel place was all about. How I wish we had stopped sooner!

Scattered all along the major highways from Arizona to Connecticut, east and west, north and south, this restaurant and gift shop with its old fashioned country store appearance is definitely an oasis for travelers and locals alike. Step up to the front porch and take a moment to relax in their dozens of rocking chairs.

You first walk inside a gift shop loaded with everything a traveler really needs... nostalgic candy, snacks and soda as well as seasonal merchandise, clothes, and toys. Remember those Moon Pies from your childhood? Here you can buy a case at a reasonable price. They also have the great old candy like valomilk bars or the Skybars and chocolate neccos.

Don't fill up on too much candy. The dining room is to the left and a friendly hostess or host is ready to seat you. You sit at tables and chairs that surround a large fireplace on one wall. The other walls are decorated in old-time cooking utensils, tools, equipment, photos, etc.

Then there's the food. Comfort food never tasted so good! Check out the chicken and dumplings or chicken fried steak! I love the hearty beef stew with cole slaw and corn muffins on the side. It is served in a one-serving size cast iron pan. The chicken and dumplings are made from scratch with thick strands of the dumplings that look like wide noodles but melt in your mouth they are so soft and tender.

My absolute favorite is the Cracker Barrel breakfast. Every breakfast is served with a bowl of warm grits. If you've never had grits, don't knock it. Add a little butter and sugar and take a bite. It is similar to oatmeal but made with corn meal. The pancakes are light and delicious. The sausage is slightly spicy, so I pour a little of the country gravy over the patties and its perfect. The biscuits are so light and delicious! If you need sugar free jam or pancake syrup, just ask. They are always accomadating. And trust me, your cup of coffee will never run out.

The closest Cracker Barrel to Los Angeles unfortunately is all the way in Kingman, Arizona. I don't know why they haven't found a spot here in California. They could certainly do a booking business off the 5 freeway in Burbank. Or on the 14 in Palmdale. Etc.

Daphne's Greek Cafe

Daphne's Greek Cafe

If you are looking for delicious Greek food, check out the new Daphne's Greek Cafe in Burbank, CA. Located at 1781 N. Victory Place across from Hometown Buffet, this latest franchise takes the fast food concept and turns it into a unique dining experience. Order at the counter, take a number, and sit down. Within 10 minutes or so, a waiter brings you your order straight from the kitchen. That's where the fast food concept ends. Entrees are made fresh in the kitchen within view of your seat.
